What a Design Project Really Is and why it matters far more than most people expect.
A design project is not a collection of beautiful images with furniture placed inside a room.
It is a structured, professional plan that transforms the vision of a functional and aesthetically refined interior into a buildable reality. It is a multi-layered process made up of carefully sequenced stages, each designed to save time, protect your budget, and allow you to clearly understand how your space will look and function before implementation begins.
Good design does not happen by chance. It is built deliberately.
Where a Design Project Begins
Every design project starts with the client. It starts with you.
Before any layouts, finishes, or visuals are discussed, the first priority is understanding who you are and how you live or work. Without this foundation, design decisions become guesswork.
For residential projects, this means learning about your lifestyle in detail. Whether you have young children or school-aged kids, how you move through your day, what matters most to you in your home, your personal preferences, design sensibility, and the budget you are working within.
For commercial or business spaces, the focus shifts toward understanding your business activity, brand identity, company values, team structure, and how many people will use the space daily.
Without this understanding, it is impossible to design a space that truly supports your lifestyle or business and delivers the result you expect.
The Initial Consultation
The process typically begins with a short introductory phone call.
This conversation allows us to get acquainted and gives me the opportunity to ask the essential questions that shape the direction of the project. It also ensures expectations are aligned before moving forward.
At this stage, I also request a few reference images from you. These are interiors you are drawn to visually. They help clarify which moods, details, and design elements resonate with you, often more clearly than words alone.
Site Visit and Measurements
Once we move forward, an on-site meeting is scheduled.
During this visit, the space is reviewed in detail and all functional, technical, and practical requirements specific to the project are discussed. Every space has constraints and opportunities that must be understood before planning begins.
Accurate site measurement follows. Precise dimensions are essential. Without them, professional space planning and technical drawings are impossible.
This is the point where ideas begin to translate into real, workable solutions.
Space Planning: The Foundation of the Project
With measurements confirmed, the project moves into space planning.
This is one of the most important stages of the entire design process. A well-designed layout directly affects comfort, functionality, and how the space will serve you for many years to come.
All planning solutions are developed individually, based on your specific needs, lifestyle, or business requirements. At this stage, two layout options are created, allowing you to compare approaches and select the solution that best supports how you actually use the space.
Once the layout is approved, the project moves forward with clarity and confidence.
Design Concept Development
After the space plan is finalized, the project moves into the design concept stage.
The design concept defines the overall atmosphere, style, and character of the space. This includes the selection of materials, colour palettes, furniture, textures, lighting, and decorative elements.
Elevation drawings are developed for key built-in millwork and custom design elements to create a clear visual understanding of how the interior will look and feel as a cohesive whole.
At this stage, two concept options are presented for review. For selected areas, 3D visualizations can be provided upon request to offer a realistic preview of the final result.
Concept Presentation and Material Review
Once the design concept is complete, a formal presentation is held.
During this review, the full project is presented and all proposed materials are discussed in detail. Physical samples play a critical role, allowing you to see true colours, feel textures, and understand material quality.
By curating and presenting samples, you are saved time and effort. Visiting multiple showrooms or sourcing materials independently is not required.
Technical Documentation and Implementation
After concept approval, the project enters the technical phase.
This includes the preparation of a full working drawing set and all documentation required for implementation. Special attention is given to complex details and custom solutions so contractors have clear guidance throughout construction.
This level of precision ensures accuracy, efficiency, and a smoother construction process.
Project Coordination and Completion
Beyond design and documentation, additional stages may form part of full project coordination. These can include tendering, designer site visits, supervision, documentation coordination, final inspections, and turnkey project delivery.
Each stage plays a role in protecting the design intent and ensuring the project is executed as planned.
